The use of cavatappi or elbow macaroni ensures a hearty bite, while the golden breadcrumb topping adds a delightful crunch. This baked mac and cheese is the perfect balance of creamy, cheesy, and crispy.

Ingredients

🍽️ Servings: 8

  • 1 lb cavatappi or elbow macaroni

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour

  • 4 cups whole milk

  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded

  • 1 cup Gruyère cheese, shredded

  • 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, grated

  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder

  • Salt and pepper to taste

Breadcrumb Topping:

  • 1 cup Panko breadcrumbs

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

  • 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese, grated

  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley

Steps

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.

Step 2

Cook the pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Step 3

In a large saucepan, melt 1/2 cup butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until it forms a paste (roux).

Step 4

Gradually whisk in the milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens.

Step 5

Reduce the heat to low and add the sharp cheddar, Gruyère, and Parmesan cheese. Stir until the cheeses are melted and the sauce is smooth.

Step 6

Stir in the Dijon mustard, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Adjust seasoning to taste.

Step 7

Add the cooked pasta to the cheese sauce, tossing to coat evenly. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish.

Step 8

In a small bowl, combine the Panko breadcrumbs, melted butter, Parmesan cheese, and dried parsley.

Step 9

Sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture evenly over the top of the macaroni and cheese.

Step 10

Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the cheese is bubbly.
