This stuffing takes the traditional to a new level by incorporating the autumnal trio of apples, cranberries, and pecans. The sweet and tart notes of the fruit complement the savory stuffing base, while the pecans add a satisfying crunch. It's the perfect side dish to elevate your fall feast.

Ingredients

🍽️ Servings: 8

  • 8 cups day-old bread, cubed

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter

  • 1 large onion, finely chopped

  • 2 celery stalks, diced

  • 2 apples, cored and diced (use a sweet variety like Honeycrisp)

  • 1 cup dried cranberries

  • 1 cup chopped pecans

  • 2 teaspoons dried sage

  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • 2 1/2 cups chicken or vegetable broth

Steps

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

Step 2

Spread the bread cubes on a baking sheet and toast in the oven for about 10 minutes or until slightly crisp. Remove and set aside.

Step 3

In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.

Step 4

Add the chopped onion and celery, sautéing until softened, about 5 minutes.

Step 5

Stir in the diced apples, dried cranberries, and chopped pecans. Cook for an additional 3-4 minutes until the apples are slightly tender.

Step 6

Season the mixture with dried sage, dried thyme, salt, and pepper. Mix well.

Step 7

In a large bowl, combine the toasted bread cubes with the sautéed mixture. Pour the broth over the mixture and toss until the bread absorbs the liquid.

Step 8

Transfer the stuffing to a greased baking dish.

Step 9

Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes or until the top is golden brown.

Make it your own!

  • Add cooked and crumbled sausage for a heartier version.

  • Incorporate a handful of chopped fresh herbs like parsley or rosemary for a burst of freshness.

  • Drizzle a bit of maple syrup over the top before baking for an extra touch of sweetness.
