Ingredients

For the turkey patties:

  • 1 lb ground turkey

  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs

  • 1 large egg

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 2 tablespoons teriyaki sauce (store-bought or homemade)

  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the teriyaki glaze:

  • 1/4 cup teriyaki sauce

  • 2 tablespoons honey

  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar

  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger

For assembling the burgers:

  • 4 pineapple slices

  • 4 whole wheat burger buns, toasted

  • Lettuce leaves

  • Thinly sliced red onion

  • Optional: mayonnaise or aioli for spreading

Steps

Step 1

Preheat your grill or stovetop grill pan to medium-high heat.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground turkey, breadcrumbs, minced garlic, egg, and 2 tablespoons of teriyaki sauce. Mix everything together until well combined. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Step 3

Form the turkey mixture into 4 equal-sized patties, making sure they are slightly larger than the burger buns to account for shrinkage during cooking.

Step 4

In a small saucepan, whisk together the ingredients for the teriyaki glaze - teriyaki sauce, honey, rice vinegar, and grated ginger. Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally until it thickens slightly. Remove from heat.

Step 5

Grill the turkey patties and pineapple slices for about 4-5 minutes on each side until the turkey is fully cooked and the pineapple is slightly caramelized.

Step 6

During the last minute of grilling, brush the teriyaki glaze over each turkey patty and pineapple slice, flipping them to coat both sides.

Step 7

Assemble the burgers by placing a turkey patty on the bottom half of each toasted bun. Top with grilled pineapple, lettuce leaves, and thinly sliced red onion.

Step 8

Optionally, spread some mayonnaise or aioli on the top half of the bun before placing it on the burger.

Make it your own!

  • For a vegetarian version, swap the turkey patties with grilled marinated portobello mushrooms or plant-based burger patties.

  • Add a slice of melted Swiss or provolone cheese on top of each turkey patty for extra creaminess.

  • Experiment with different types of buns, like brioche or pretzel buns, for a unique texture.

  • Spread some mayonnaise or aioli on the top half of the bun before placing it on the burger.
